"Central Vista Redevelopment Project is a political project and it is anti-people politics."
“Politics is a way of life. We should discuss and debate whether it is pro-people politics or anti-people politics.” says Prof. Priyaleen Singh of School of Planning and Architecture Delhi while talking about the Central Vista Redevelopment Project. She calls the project authoritarianism and ecological disaster.
The Central Vista Redevelopment Project to revamp the Central Vista in New Delhi remains in news as people have contested its concept, design and execution at multiple levels. The government representatives have rejected the criticism as politics whereas Prof. Priyaleen Singh responds that the project is political and anti-people. She doesn't find ‘political’ an accusation as ‘politics is a way of life’ and ‘every act is political’ including the project to revamp Central Vista.
Despite the criticism the government plans to unveil a stretch of the project shortly. On the one hand the project is moving ahead as 'vital and essential' and on the other hand experts argue that it undermines laws, processes and institutions. Additionally it is detrimental to the environment as old trees will be chopped from the green zone, widened roads will create more pollution, the land will be overloaded with skyscrapers which means the water table is going to deplete. Moreover the government has no plan for the debris it is going to generate. Architects, conservationists and environmentalists have criticized the project as an expression of ‘authoritarianism’. The architect of the project has been compared to Nazi architect Berthold Konrad Hermann Albert Speer known as Albert Speer.
What is the relevance of all the criticism as the government refuses to listen?
Prof. Priyaleen explains the project, its repercussions and the kind of precedent it will create. She underlines that the criticism of the project is relevant and will remain so as it is going to be a template for the development projects in the future. She finds links between Special Economic Zones (SEZs), land acquisition laws and different projects in different parts of India.
