The secretary general of the Belarusian Red Cross Society Dmitri Shevtsov stated on Sunday that the situation at the Bruzgi migrant camp on the border with Poland could not be called ‘calm,’ though he noted that it was ‘routine' in spite of this.
According to Shevtsov, the national organisation is distributing assistance to people "who are in unsuitable conditions.” He added that the Belarusian Red Cross ‘is a provider’ of assistance from various public organisations, as well as from ordinary citizens.
SOT, Dmitri Shevtsov, Secretary General of the Belarusian Red Cross Society (Russian): "This is a routine situation. Of course, it cannot be called calm, because we see a large number of migrants living in inappropriate conditions. So the Belarusian Red Cross is a so-called mediator between public associations, organisations, institutions, just ordinary people who provide humanitarian assistance to those who are here."
SOT, Dmitri Shevtsov, Secretary General of the Belarusian Red Cross Society (Russian): "So, yesterday we set up tents, heated, large tents, first of all, to provide food for children and women and pregnant women, because we saw that children do not always have access to food. So, it is the second day, when we are clearly confident that all children are fed, women are fed, moreover, families received a small food kit so that they have some food left. Food and water, not only the water they have here, drinking water from the water supply company, but also ordinary bottled water. It [water] is brought daily, we also bring warm clothes, we bring blankets, everything they need."
SOT, Dmitri Shevtsov, Secretary General of the Belarusian Red Cross Society (Russian): "I don't really know how long this situation will last, but we are getting ready. We understand that no matter how long they [migrants] stay here, even if one or two people stay, we will ensure their well-being."
SOT, Dmitri Shevtsov, Secretary General of the Belarusian Red Cross Society (Russian): "We understood that we could not manage to collect a large amount of food and clothing and bring them here, so in the first day, with the support of the state, the Regional Executive Committee and the Republic Council, we organised support from the dairy and meat industries. They delivered to us tons of produce, and we could easily provide food and clothing to [the migrants] for three or four days, clothes were also delivered from our enterprises."
Following a surge in attempts by migrants to get through Belarus to Poland and onwards to other EU countries, Warsaw has accused Minsk of provoking a migrant crisis in Europe. The Ministry of Defense of Belarus has said in response that Polish accusations of border violations by Belarusian military units and its involvement in causing the migration crisis were groundless.
